ROMARIN dies in Brazil :: Racing in Brazil - The Brazilian Group 1 Races!

ROMARIN dies in Brazil

Prominent Brazilian sire ROMARIN dies in Brazil - by Michel burns (@ Thoroughbred Times on line)

Multiple graded stakes winner Romarin (Brz), Brazil’s top national sire from 2005 through ‘07, died Friday after contracting an illness that caused his sudden death at Centro Siqueira and Mercandante in Tijucas do Sul, Parana, Brazil. He was 19.

One of Brazil’s first Thoroughbreds to achieve success in U.S. racing, he helped pave the way for future racing stars of that nation on the international stage. Romarin scored in the 1994 Grande Premio Piratininga (Brz-G2) and finished second in the ‘93 Grande Premio Derby Paulista (Brz-G1) (Brazilian Derby) as a three-year-old.

Sent to the U.S. to trainer Richard Mandella, Romarin won four stakes in North America, including the 1995 and ‘96 editions of the San Gabriel Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita Park and the ‘95 Early Times Turf Classic Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs for owner Linneo Eduardo de Paula Machado’s Haras Sao Jose and Expedictus.

A prominent outcross pedigree sire, Romarin has sired seven Group 1 winners in Brazil, all from different broodmare sires, including three classic winners.

His son Tenarin, out of the Pleasant Variety mare Tenacite, most recently lowered the stakes record for 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) on the turf when capturing the Grande Premio Derby Paulista in November.
